Why ambition isn't just for Men

“Good girls go to heaven, bad girls go everywhere.” *

Good news! A study by Weber Shandwick shows that professional women in Europe are just as ambitious as their male colleagues (22% versus 25%) which is not the case among Americans.

These results are confirmed by various other studies:
Terra Femina reveals that 48% of the French women questioned for a survey in 2013 said they were ambitious and showed the same desire to succeed as the men...

GENDER EQUALITY IS A FOUNDING VALUE OF THE EU, SO WHY THE LACK OF PROGRESS?

A report on Europe’s gender equality reveals negligible progress since 2005, with men still grossly over-represented in political and economic decision-making.

We all know we are a long way from living in a gender equal world. Globally speaking, Europe is seen as a leader in moving women’s rights forward, but just how far are European countries from putting men and women on an equal footing?

Structural and Cultural Barriers Must be Removed for True Gender Equality

Despite decades of gender equality legislation, it is still the perceived norm for women to stop working to care, and for men to provide financially. But the last century has seen a gradual shift in this power structure. Women are now more educated, independent, ambitious and confident than ever before, as demonstrated in PwC’s report on female millennials. What it means to be a ‘woman’ has changed. But has the man’s role adapted at the same pace? And what are the barriers slowing it down?

HOW TO HANDLE SEXIST CULTURE AT WORK

The difficulty is whether to speak out or turn the other cheek
I work in a medium-sized UK business with lots of senior women employees but only old men on the board. When a male colleague congratulated a senior board member on the clarity of his argument, he exclaimed: “Well you have to keep it very simple when you’re explaining it to women.” I am under no illusion about the sexist culture of the business. The question is how do I handle it? Say something? Or pretend it’s not happening? Public affairs professional, female.

EPWN – WOMEN, THREE REASONS TO GET PROMOTED

One of the top questions I get asked by career women is, “Kamin, why would I even want to get promoted? Other than for money, it just doesn’t seem safe to move up.” I understand that question as I grappled with it in my own career. In some organizations, there are a lot of politics and let’s just say, not the kindest of behaviors toward others at the upper levels. However, I’m still a huge advocate for women advancing in their corporate careers and here are three reasons I’d like you to consider.

WHY ALL WOMEN NEED A STRONG LINKEDIN PROFILE

Women are natural relationship builders. We excel at reaching out and building friendships. But reading research from the Boolean Black Belt Sourcing we seem to be falling behind on our use of LinkedIn. At one time there were fewer women on this professional platform than our male colleagues, but now this is one gender gap at least that has closed.

SO WHY ARE THERE SO FEW OF US IN THE TOP 100 LINKEDIN USERS, ONLY 5 TO BE PRECISE?

But does that even matter truthfully? Do we really have to get into the “mine is bigger than yours” spitting contest?

COMPANIES AND GENDER

THAT HARVARD MBA WON’T BE ENOUGH TO CLOSE THE GENDER GAP

The danger of conventional wisdom is it doesn’t have to be true to influence reality. New research reveals that the gender gaps in career growth between Harvard MBA graduates are not a result of women prioritizing family over career more so than their male peers. Rather, the unspoken assumption they do seems at play in affecting outcomes in their lives.

A HIDDEN QUOTA FOR WOMEN IN TOP MANAGEMENT

Companies work fairly hard to place one woman — but only one — in a top management position, according to research by Cristian Desző, an associate professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business, and two co-authors. The article found evidence of a “quota” effect: Once a company had appointed one woman to a top-tier job, the chances of a second woman landing an elite position at the same firm drop substantially — by about 50 percent, in fact.

NATIONAL WOMEN IN ENGINEERING DAY AND THE MYTHS ABOUT WOMEN IN STEM

Women are hugely under-represented in STEM fields – just 15% of all STEM employees are female. Today (23rd June) is National Women in Engineering Day which aims to raise the profile of women in engineering and encourage girls to consider a career in the sector.
The challenge is that whilst there are many STEM employers who are making huge progress in female representation, many women working in the sector still face significant barriers. The Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings shows that the gender pay gap is 25% in ‘skilled trades’ occupation, which includes STEM roles. Our own Project 28-40 STEM Sector Insight found that overarching issues women in work face are particularly pronounced in STEM industries.

Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, explains why she’s the Champion for CHANGEMAKERS.

It is time to nurture the engagement and passion of women and girls for science and technology. Equipped with this knowledge I believe they will create just, inclusive and sustainable solutions to the challenges facing our global society. If, as a society, we are truly committed to achieving sustainable development and gender equality, we can no longer afford to silence the voices and minds of women and girls. It is my belief that given a strong foundation in science and maths, they will ask the questions, create the ideas and develop the solutions that will not only address the challenges we face today but also strengthen the fabric of our society as a whole.

Your CV: the all time classic do’s and dont’s

There can be conflicting advice when it comes to preparing your resume; some people suggest getting creative with paper, fonts and formatting to stand out (my experience tells me recruiters don’t like that much), while others stress making sure your resume has keywords that are machine scannable (not as important as human readability).
