Hub report – Parenthood Policies

The JUMP Hub is the network of corporate diversity officers dedicated to the exchange of best practices on gender equality at work.

The 10th of November 2015, speakers and participants from different companies and backgrounds met to discuss the question of how to manage parenthood at work for better gender equality.

On the occasion, Isabella Lenarduzzi gave a brief overview of an Axiom / JUMP research conducted in 2013: Pioneering fathers: behind every great woman there is a great man. This is a unique study concerning the shift in traditional gender roles at home and in the workplace, as well as men’s greater involvement in the family sphere.

Afterwards, four speakers gave their advice and testimonials:

Pascale Pitavy, Co-founder of Equilibres, discussed the matter of parenthood policies: why companies need them and how they can benefit from them.

Ilse Laurijssen, Postdoctoral Researcher at at the Sociology Department of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, shared her insights on the topic of time pressure during parenthood and how to manage it.

Françoise Goffinet from the Institute for equality of women and men talked about the legal and historical picture concerning parenthood policies and the uttermost importance of communicating to men about parental leave.

Claire Godding, Diversity & Inclusion Manager at BNP Paribas-Fortis, explained that her company set up parenthood policies after a dialogue with the young parent employees and gave a picture of what can easily be done.

Several discussions occurred between the participants and covered a range of topics:

  • How to deal with resistance?
  • Is there still a lot of work to be done?
  • Staying in touch during maternal leave
  • Visions for the future
