WO.MEN, WORK, WORLD: THE UNFINISHED REVOLUTION

The massive influx of women in the workforce has been the main driver of economic growth in the past 50 years, more so than the spread of new technology or the development of the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China). The most important variable for the competitiveness of a country is the use of its human capital. If women participated in the paid economy to the same extent as men, the GDP (gross domestic product) of the European Union would increase by 14%!

En tant qu'homme, je ne suis pas féministe, peut-être proféministe

Une mode est récemment apparue dans la presse française et internationale à propos des hommes qui se disent “féministes” et dont on présente l’engagement comme “essentiel” pour les droits des femmes.

COMPANIES AND GENDER

WHY GENDER BALANCE CAN’T WAIT

The World Economic Forum’s recent Global Gender Gap Report 2015 gives us a wealth of detail about the continued worldwide imbalance in gender equality and what it means for the future. In some areas the news is good. Political representation, for example, has made great strides in the 10 years covered in the study. Overall, 50% of the countries have or have had a female head of state. And it’s been shown that once women attain leadership roles, the number of women serving in senior positions starts to rise.

In some areas the news is good.

Women in Company Leadership Tied to Stronger Profits, Study Says

Having women in the highest corporate offices is correlated with increased profitability, according to a new study of nearly 22,000 publicly traded companies in 91 countries. The study, released Monday by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, a nonprofit group based in Washington, and EY, the audit firm formerly known as Ernst & Young, found that despite the apparent economic benefits, many corporations are lacking in gender diversity.

Proof That Women Get Less Credit for Teamwork

Being able to work well with others is a standard requirement for most jobs today. But a new study suggests that women do not get their fair share of credit for group work, especially when they work with men. Heather Sarsons, a PhD candidate in economics at Harvard, gathered data on economists to see how teaming up with others (in this case to coauthor a paper) affects the likelihood of getting promoted (i.e., getting tenure), and whether it differs by gender...
